This week was Small Business Week, a time when we applaud the men and women who embody the entrepreneurial spirit that makes this country great.

The 6th District is home to many great small businesses, and I’m lucky to have met many of our business owners. They share a common drive to create and build and to add to the community around them. They are an inspiration to us all.

The world as we see it in 2015 is nothing like what it was 20 or even 10 years ago. Evolving industries and geopolitical shifts in the last few decades call for a new paradigm that protects American workers and consumers while also maintaining a robust economic output.

Washington, D.C. -- Today, Senator Al Franken of Minnesota hosted the Fifth Annual Minnesota Hotdish Off on Capitol Hill. This was freshman Congressman Tom Emmer (MN-06)’s first time participating in the competition, a fact he highlighted in his “Fresh Meat Hotdish.”

“Like many Minnesotans, I grew up on hotdish,” said Emmer. “As the delegation’s newest member, I’m excited to join my colleagues in this annual tradition celebrating our home state. Just like my work in Congress is a fresh take on politics, my hotdish was a fresh take on my mom’s recipe.”

GOP Rep. Tom Emmer is the first to acknowledge how much he is learning in his first 100 days of his first term in Congress serving Minnesota’s Sixth Congressional District: the Capitol Hill hierarchy, the importance of making a few early friends on the other side of the aisle, and the reality of a good night’s sleep on an air mattress. (Emmer isn’t renting a D.C. apartment; he sleeps in his office.)
