Washington, D.C.— Congressman Tom Emmer (MN-06) joined a bipartisan, bicameral letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken in support of adoptions of Ukrainian children by American families. The letter was led by the chairs of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption, of which Congressman Emmer is a member.

Emmer said, “American families—including those in the Sixth Congressional District--are eager to provide the safe, stable homes that every child deserves. We must treat these ongoing adoptions as an urgent priority and bring these children home.”

Specifically, the letter asks that the State Department identify vulnerable children who have begun the adoption process to prevent additional trauma. Further, the signers requested that the United States work with the Ukrainian government to allow children with in-process adoptions to stay in the United States with their host families, instead of in locations for displaced persons in Europe.

There are approximately 300 Ukrainian children who are waiting to join their American adoptive families or host families.
