Washington, D.C. – Earlier this week, Congressman Tom Emmer’s Firearm Due Process Protection Act, which is supported by 14 of his House Republican colleagues, passed out of the House Judiciary Committee markup. The legislation provides legal recourse for law-abiding Americans who were improperly denied the ability to legally purchase a firearm due to administrative errors during a background check.
“Thousands of Americans are wrongfully denied their constitutional right to purchase a firearm every year, not because they are criminals, but because of bureaucratic incompetence. I am grateful to Chairman Jordan and the members of the House Judiciary Committee for advancing this commonsense legislative fix for Americans whose Second Amendment rights are being wrongfully restricted,” Congressman Tom Emmer said.
“Under current federal law, an individual can wait months or even years to regain their Second Amendment rights after a simple administrative mistake. Rep. Emmer’s important bill will assist law-abiding Americans in restoring their Second Amendment rights by requiring courts to hold an expedited hearing,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan said.
