Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Tom Emmer (MN-06) hosted a roundtable for law enforcement at Great River Regional Library in Elk River. Participants included officers from across the Sixth Congressional District.

Emmer said, “Our law enforcement officers sacrifice so much to keep our communities safe. It is always a privilege to sit down with our men and women in uniform to hear how we can support their important work.” 

The roundtable brought together Emmer and members of the Wright County Sheriff's Office, Carver County Sheriff's Office, Anoka County Sheriff's Office, as well as from the Saint Cloud, and Ramsey Police Departments.

Background:

Emmer has been a longtime advocate for community engagement with law enforcement. In 2020, Emmer introduced the Community OutPost (COP) Outreach and Engagement Act. This legislation was inspired by the successful work of the Saint Cloud Police Department.

Since 2017, the SCPD’s COP House has been a setting for community members to positively engage with law enforcement and first responders outside of an emergency. The COP Outreach and Engagement Act would establish a pilot program for communities nationwide to build their own COP Houses. You can read more about the bill here.

Additionally, Emmer has advocated for the allocation of federal resources for local law enforcement. For the 2023 fiscal year, Emmer helped secure $770.8 million for the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program, which directs funding to state and local recipients to support local law enforcement, corrections, drug treatment and more.
