November is National Adoption Month.
In the United States, there are nearly 135,000 adoptions per year. While that statistic is encouraging, there are still hundreds of thousands of children in the United States and millions of children around the world who need a permanent home.
Recently, I joined Voices for Adoption for a Congressional briefing about the importance of adoption:
Congressman Emmer speaks at the Voices for Adoption National Adoption Month event.
I am proud to advocate for adoptive parents and children in Congress. Last week, I cosponsored the Adoptee Citizenship Act in response to a current loophole that prevents internationally adopted children born before 1983 from receiving automatic citizenship – often to the surprise of the adoptees themselves. The Adoptee Citizenship Act would simply fix this loophole to ensure citizenship for international adoptees regardless of when they were born.
Those willing to provide a loving home for children are some of the greatest among us. We owe them, and the children they care for, all of our support.
