Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Tom Emmer (MN-06) issued the following announcement to remind the approximately nine million Americans, including more than 115,000 Minnesotans, who do not normally file taxes but may be eligible for an Economic Impact Payment to register using the Non-Filers Portal on IRS.gov before the Saturday, November 21 deadline.

"Congress came together in a non-partisan fashion to pass the CARES Act and provide eligible Americans with assistance during this trying time. Americans and struggling families in need have the opportunity to claim their benefits, but they must do so soon. If you do not normally file taxes and have not received your Economic Impact Payment, please register today," said Emmer. 

Eligible Americans are those who have not already received their Economic Impact Payment, do not typically file a tax return, are not required to file a tax return, or certain benefit recipients who got an EIP for themselves but need to provide information about a non-beneficiary spouse or qualifying child. For those who do file a tax return, including low- and moderate-income workers and families claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, or other tax benefits, are not eligible to utilize the tool.

Emmer concluded, "If you or someone you know is experiencing difficulty navigating the IRS, or is having any issues with a federal agency, please do not hesitate to contact my casework staff to assist you. We are always here and ready to help." 

All Americans can use the Get My Payment application to check the status of their payment. The designation of "Payment Status Not Available" will be visible until the payment is scheduled to be issued. This response does not mean a person is not eligible or will not receive a payment.
