Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Tom Emmer (MN-06) released the following statement regarding the House of Representative’s passage of the first substantial tax reform in 31 years:

“Today is a historic day for taxpayers across the country. After eight years of dismal economic growth, stagnant wages and burdensome regulations, we finally have a chance to change that.  I was proud to support the Tax Cut and Jobs Act as we work to simplify our overly complicated and burdensome tax code for families and businesses across the nation, and enable the United States to become the economic powerhouse it deserves to be.

“This legislation unties the hands of small businesses and corporations so they can be competitive on a global stage. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act also puts middle-class families first by doubling the standard deduction, increasing the Child Tax Credit, retaining the Adoption Tax Credit, and ultimately lowering tax rates for 99% of Americans.

“It is important to keep in mind, though, that our work to make the United States a better place for families and a more competitive place for business is far from complete. I look forward to working with my counterparts in the Senate to reconcile the differences between our two proposals. We must also stay focused on addressing our runaway spending and ensure that we spend the taxpayer’s money as responsibly as possible.

“We did not get here overnight, and we will not fix things overnight. But, I am proud that today, we started down the path toward boosting our economy and letting middle-class Americans keep more of the money they worked so hard to earn."
