Dear Friend, 

National Police Week is a time to come together and remember the men and women in blue who protect each one of us, our loved ones and this nation. This week, America has a chance to honor those who have chosen a life in uniform, who leave their homes for a shift not knowing if they will return. I hope you will take time to thank a police officer for the sacrifices they make every single day.

We remember, too, the officers who were killed in the line of duty. Last year, 135 police officers lost their lives serving and protecting our communities. We remember them and their families who miss their loved ones every day.

The great state of Minnesota is home to many phenomenal officers who put their lives on the line to ensure the safety and security of our communities.

During my time in Congress, I have always focused on ways to support our law enforcement community.

As an update, here’s what I’ve been working on to support our men and women in blue.

I am the cosponsor of three very important bills for law enforcement:

• H.R. 613, the Lieutenant Osvaldo Albarati Correctional Officer Self-Protection Act.
• H.R. 2561, the Protecting Officers of the Law In Civilian Establishments (POLICE) Act.  
• H.R. 4732, the National Law Enforcement Museum Commemorative Coin Act.

This year, I also signed onto letters to the House Appropriations Committee supporting funding for the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne JAG) Program, the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) programs, the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program, and Veterans Treatment Courts.

Yesterday, I met with the Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police to discuss the many challenges law enforcement officers face in Minnesota and told them they can always count on me for my full support!

Recently I took ride along with the St. Cloud Police Department.  

Last month, I was honored to present Avon Police Officer Jason Falconer with the Congressional Badge of Bravery for his heroic actions at the St. Cloud mall. He is the first Minnesota police officer to be awarded this badge of honor. To read about Officer Falconer’s courageous behavior.
