Laketown Township 201 Community Sewer Improvement

Funding Requested: $2,500,000

Total Project Cost: $21,000,000

Project Summary:

Replace 40+year old 201 Community Sewer system (20 year life expectancy) with sanitary sewer connection from home to street to met line. Currently each home has aging holding tanks with substandard pipes out to substandard lines to lift stations that eventually connect to the met line. The 6 residential neighborhoods connected to the 201 system are along shorelines of 3 lakes (Bavaria, Pierson, Reitz) and involve Minnehaha Creek and Carver Creek watersheds. One line is actually located along the floor of Reitz Lake.

Background Information:

This is an immediate, critical, and emergency priority for the City. If there are future events, there will most certainly be flooding for these properties that exist along the Watab/Ditch 13. Without this project, these homeowners will repetitively experience property damages due to high water levels. The City received $2.5M from the State of MN in 2023 to create a temporary solution that provides an open ditch concept along the Watab River/Ditch 13, however, the feasibility study reports that this solution will relocate water further downstream and flood other areas of Sartell, primarily roads and area near City Hall. The only proper way to permanently remediate this is to relocate and route water out of Sartell on the north side of the community and ensure it does not run through the heart of the community. The installation of the 60" main allows the City to route water north out of Sartell. In addition, the pipe would be installed under the construction of new roadway 15th Street North. This roadway construction not only solves the flooding concerns permanently, but also addresses a massive traffic issue within this exact same neighborhood. By completing both these projects at the same time, we are able to effectively save taxpayers over $4M. Thanks to STBG funds and the 2023 Congressionally Funded Projects allocation, the City has been able to secure right-of-way for this critical project and now needs construction funds.
