City of Gilman Infrastructure Improvements
Funding Requested: $2,500,000
Total Project Cost: $12,700,000
Project Summary:
Significant utility system deficiencies in the City of Gilman have elevated health and safety risks for residents. Gilman’s existing wastewater infrastructure needs repair or replacement due to age and condition as well as health and safety concerns. Gilman’s project includes replacing select portions of the wastewater collection system and extending the system to provide service for several new users, and improvements to the existing wastewater pond system. The proposed project also includes improvements to an area that floods north of CSAH 5 and existing stormwater system, as well as adding new storm sewer for new users.
Background Information:
Investing in this infrastructure system can be a wise and beneficial use of taxpayers' money for several reasons: 1. Public Health: A new sanitary sewer system can significantly improve public health by reducing the risk of waterborne diseases and contamination. 2. Environmental Protection: Upgrading to a new sanitary sewer system can help protect the environment by preventing sewage leaks and overflows that can pollute waterways, harm aquatic ecosystems, and contaminate groundwater sources. Modern systems often incorporate advanced technology and designs that minimize environmental impact. 3. Long-Term Cost Savings: While the initial investment in a new sanitary sewer system may seem significant, it can lead to long-term cost savings for taxpayers. New systems are typically more efficient and require less maintenance than older infrastructure, reducing the need for costly repairs and emergency interventions over time. 4. Compliance with Regulations: Septic systems may not meet regulatory standards for wastewater treatment and disposal. Investing in a new system ensures compliance with environmental regulations, avoiding potential fines and penalties for non-compliance in the future. 5. Economic Benefits: A reliable and modern sanitary sewer system can enhance property values and attract new businesses and residents to the area. It provides essential infrastructure that supports economic growth and development, contributing to the overall prosperity of the community. 6. Quality of Life: Access to clean and safe water services is essential for maintaining a high quality of life. A new sanitary sewer system improves the overall livability of a community, enhancing residents' well-being and satisfaction with their environment.
