CSAH 19 & CR 117 Intersection Improvements

Funding Requested: $1,020,000

Total Project Cost: $5,100,000

Project Summary:

The project would convert the existing 3-way stop-controlled intersection at CSAH 19, CR 117, and CR 203 to a roundabout. The project would install medians that would effectively reduce motor vehicle speeds and reduce the frequency and severity of crashes. The project will benefit pedestrians and bicyclists by reducing the distances pedestrians and bicyclists must cross at intersections, constructing high visibility crosswalk markings, and raised medians which will benefit users of the Lake Independence Regional Trail (LIRT) which is located adjacent to CSAH 19. The project would also include ADA-compliant ramps and trail connections.

Background Summary:

The funding would be used to convert the existing 3-way stop-controlled intersection at CSAH 19, CR 117, and CR 203 to a roundabout, and install medians that would effectively reduce motor vehicle speeds and reduce the frequency and severity of crashes. The project is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because it improves safety by removing the unconventional 3-way stop geometry and ensuring safer crossing conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists.
