City of Independence Ihduhapi Road Safety, Access, and Infrastructure Improvement Project

Funding Requested: $1,000,000

Total Project Cost: $1,000,000

Project Summary:

This project would pave and improve approximately one mile of Ihduhapi Road, a currently unpaved gravel roadway that serves as the primary access route to the Vinland National Center campus and surrounding properties. The proposed project will upgrade the roadway to a paved, all-weather transportation facility designed to modern safety standards. Improvements will include roadway grading, base stabilization, asphalt paving, drainage improvements, and roadway safety features to improve travel reliability and durability.

Background Information:

Ihduhapi Road currently operates as a gravel roadway subject to erosion, potholes, washboarding, and seasonal deterioration that can create hazardous travel conditions for vehicles. Weather events such as heavy rain, snow, and seasonal thaw can significantly degrade the road surface, leading to unstable driving conditions and limited accessibility. The roadway serves a broad range of users including residents, employees, visitors, service providers, and emergency responders traveling to the Vinland National Center campus. Paving Ihduhapi Road will provide a durable roadway surface capable of supporting daily traffic, improving roadway safety, and ensuring reliable year-round access for vehicles traveling through the corridor.
