City of Buffalo Wastewater Treatment Plant System Improvements

Funding Requested: $10,000,000

Total Project Cost: $27,170,000

Project Summary:

The project will include the construction of a new filtration building for the removal of phosphorus and rehabilitation of existing treatment structures and equipment that are no longer operationally and technically supported.  Upgrading the wastewater treatment process protects the water quality of the North Fork of the Crow River by supporting healthy local lakes and preserves recreational opportunities—resources that directly influence local and regional economic vitality. These improvements also ensure the City of Buffalo can meet increasingly strict pollutant limits, avoiding potential state or federal compliance penalties and enabling continued growth in local businesses, industry, and housing.

Background Information:

This project is needed due to the pressing challenges faced by the City of Buffalo in wastewater management. These improvements are essential for protecting public health, supporting economic growth, and meeting federally delegated permit requirements. The City of Buffalo requires upgrades to its wastewater treatment process to comply with permits and avoid significant penalties. Ensuring permit compliance is critical to maintaining Buffalo’s economic vitality and long term development.
