City of East Bethel’s Sewer and Water Utilities Connection Project

Funding Requested: $3,000,000

Total Project Cost: $10,500,000

Project Summary:

This project would replace failing infrastructure including the water tower, water treatment plant and piping to provide municipal sewer and water utilities to two elementary schools (East Bethel Elementary and Cedar Creek Elementary). Sewer mains exist already and this project would focus on water treatment, water tower and connecting lines.

Background Information:

Current water contamination of aquifers from a decommissioned landfill is producing high levels of tannins, Radium, Manganese and VOC's. Additionally, the Schools have indicated that their septic system is failing and will require immediate replacement. Removing contamination from well water is expensive and costly on a small to medium scale.  Licensed personnel are required to meet state regulations for safe system operation.

By addressing the new phosphorus limit and aging biosolids storage now, the City avoids future regulatory penalties and ensures reliable wastewater service for decades. This proactive approach delivers measurable water quality benefits, public health protection, and economic development support by providing high return on investment for federal, state, and local taxpayers.
